I cannot take her head if she isn't here. But it would be...unwise to attempt to fight anyone in my state.

[ She studies his face, sounding a little uncertain now at his change in toan. it's a little frightening. ]

Edelgard. The Emperor of Adrestia and the reason I am so haunted by the dead. She killed them, directly or otherwise. It's her fault...

[ She searches his face for a moment, settling back on her heels once more. ]

Is she the reason you're hiding here?

She is. Her goons wanted me dead, but now I'm here. Hiding. Waiting until I can finally, finally kill her. So the dead may find peace.

[ She watches him seriously a moment before quietly venturing, ]

Are you sure that it is more death that will appease them?

It has to. What other choice is there, to grant them peace?

[ It's a hard question. But she meets his gaze evenly, searching his face. ]

If you were important to them... wouldn't they want you to live happily?

[He tenses before barking out a laugh.]

Perhaps. But how can I, when they beg me to kill her and bring them her head every single night?

[A beat.]

Well, not every night. Not last night. You...kept them away.

[ She offers him a small, almost shy smile at that. ]

Then perhaps you can hear a different message from them while I am here?

...I hope so. It would be nice to finally know peace.

[He comes over and very tentatively reaches out to take her hand.]

[ She looks a little flustered at that, but doesn't resist. Only, ducking her head a moment, she remembers, ]

Oh! I made some tea! I think... The trees you have here are a little different than the ones from my lands, but it seemed to taste okay? I wasn't sure what else you had in the way of supplies...

...tea from trees?

[Not disgusted, just confused. Still, if she's not taking her hand away Dimitri isn't going to let go. He...likes holding Yona's hand. It's nice.]

[ She laughs at his expression, shaking her head. ]

From the bark. Many teas like that have healing properties where I come from. I thought it couldn't hurt to try the ones here as well?

Oh, I see. It can't hurt anything, at least. None of the trees here are poisonous.

[That's a thing that is a risk elsewhere, yes. But still, Dimitri doesn't move to sit or otherwise let Yona go.]

[ She looks a little alarmed that she might have accidentally poisoned him by a tree, but is relieved that apparently that won't be the case. Hopefully? ]

Maybe those are too dangerous to try, after all...?

No, no, it's too cold for any of those trees to grow here. The most poisonous things Faerghus grows are mushrooms, and never in the winter.

[ She hums thoughtfully before nodding. ] I'll remember that. In that case, would you like to come warm yourself by the fire?

[ She gives their entwined hands a gentle tug, not letting him go, just attempting to draw him closer to the fire inside the cave. ]

Was your trip to town successful?

[He goes where he's tugged.]

It was. You shouldn't freeze with what I was able to get.

[He gestures to the bag he'd set down.]

Boots, pants, warm tunics--everything you might need that I could get.

[ Her eyes widen a little much at this. ]

So much? You went to so much trouble for my sake! How can I repay you?

No repayment is necessary, Yona.

[Dimitri squeezes her hand.]

Just...do not leave me. Not yet. It isn't safe.

I'd hardly know where to go anyway.

[ She gives him a rueful smile and squeezes his hand in reassurance. ]

I'm not going anywhere just yet. Although at some point I will need to figure out how to get home again. But first I need to figure out how I got here in the first place.

[And Dimitri actually managed a smile back.

They stay in the cave for a day or two more before Dimitri learns that the army will be there within the day. He hurriedly buys a horse (for Yona) and gets them out of the area before it's all burned. He almost just sends Yona on her way alone, but the mere thought of it made him sick.

Dimitri leads them further south, closer to Garreg Mach, and eventually to an abandoned house somewhere in the woods near the monastery. He's almost a different person by the time they get somewhere safe, much calmer and less prone to violence--but only around Yona. Whenever he's left her to go hunt or to give her privacy, he always comes back on edge; at night, he always finds himself sleeping as close to Yona as he dare get. It's almost as if he can't live without her anymore.

He thinks he's okay with that.

They reach the house just in time, as barely a day later a snowstorm hits. Not a blizzard, thankfully, but it's bad enough that no one should be out it in. Dimitri finishes getting the fire going before returning to where Yona is bundled up on the (very old, honestly amazing it's still in one piece) sofa.]

[ They travel from the cave to more unfamiliar territory, the chill of the mountain winter setting into her bones in a way she'd never felt in the milder climate of Kouka. By the time they find shelter, she's shivering badly and huddled on one of the few available surfaces in this old building clutching her traveling cloak tightly around her.

She tries to cast him a grateful smile around chattering teeth when he comes to join her, grateful they have shelter and a fire, at least. ]

[Dimitri promptly settles next to Yona and pulls her into his arms for extra warmth.]

I told you, so long as you're with me, I will protect you.
